Ideas for hosting a luau birthday party for a kid

July 12, 2016

There are two birthday party traditions in our family: a nice dinner out and a themed party! Today I am sharing how I hosted a luau birthday pool party for my son’s 5th birthday.

My son turned five this month.  A few months leading up to our birthdays we start talking about themes for the party.  This year my son went from wanting an Inside Out party to the Luau Birthday Pool Party we had this past weekend. Hosting a Luau Birthday Pool Party is fun, colorful, and unique!

To set the mood, I used this colorful ALOHA lighted sign (found at Hobby Lobby years ago) for the food table. This colorful sign was the signature piece of the party that gave me inspiration for the colorful luau birthday party.  I love to mix and match party supplies with household decorations to create an inviting setting. I used this party pack for the food picks, leis for the guests, hibiscus straws and balloons, table cloth and banner. It always adds special meaning when you can incorporate some old mementos.  Do you see the little beach bum shot glasses?  My husband and I got these at a hole-in-the-wall bar on an Orange Beach, Al vacation when we were first married.

LUAU BIRTHDAY CAKE

The birthday boy decided that he wanted a layered cake that was colorful and covered with flowers.  So I took to my pinterest to get ideas on how to do it myself. I am thrilled that he was happy with my result. Five flowers, four icing colors, three cake pans (here is my favorite mini-cake pan), a couple of hours and one candle later…

LUAU BIRTHDAY PARTY FOOD

I went simple on the food since it was a five-year-olds party:  Fruit, cheese, trail mix, cookies and cake. Fruit is a great way to add to the color of a table display!  Adding umbrella toothpicks in the fruit gave the display a fun look.

I used colorful chalk markers to write the menu items on the display stands- both items bought at Hobby Lobby along with the fun Luau plates.

My mom and I collaborated on the cookies. She made her delicious homemade sugar cookies in the shapes of sunglasses, flip flops, and palm trees.
I made the icing from powdered sugar, milk, and food coloring. I think they turned out beautiful!

Luau Party Decorations

We held the party at our community pool clubhouse. So the beach vibe was automatically there. I used colorful balloons, necklaces, cutouts, leis, and grass skirts for the finishing touches. Everything came from Hobby Lobby, Amazon or Party City.

Since the party was held at the community pool, the atmosphere was already created and entertainment mostly involved playing in the pool.  However, we had a water balloon fight, flamingo ring toss, and water gun war!

Of course, the traditional events of present opening, singing happy birthday and cake cutting all took place.

Throwing a Kid’s Luau Themed Birthday Party is a fun, colorful and creative party! What theme party is on your next birthday list?
