For the new house, I promised to buy my kids a cooling mattress. Personally, I am almost always cold inside my house even when I sleep but my kids are the opposite. I bought both mattresses online during President’s weekend, so I think I got a pretty good sale, which seems to happen from time to time! So big tip is to wait when any of these are on sale. But note that I was told by many stores that Tempur-Pedic rarely goes on sale and they manage the price, so no store will have a cheaper price on the Tempur-Pedic beds (which were our favorite but WAY out of my budget for a kids mattress).
My Top 5 Cooling Mattress Options
I did a thorough research online and in-store and settled on two different ones. I am sharing my top 5 cooling mattress options and then why I chose the two brands that I did.
Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze
The Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze mattress was by far our favorite (all three of us favored it). but momma’s wallet had to vote against it. I just couldn’t justify $4,000+ for a kid’s mattress! But we love it because as it claims, it does precisely adapt to your body’s weight, shape, and temperature to alleviate any possible discomfort. breeze° mattresses feature innovative materials that work together from cover to core to keep you cooler. Purple Cooling Mattress
Honestly, the Purple Mattress that the kids sat on at a Rooms To Go over 6 months ago, started this entire let’s get a foam/cooling mattress for our new house idea. But since the gelflex grid style bedding is a little odd to imagine, I bought the kids each a small Purple Pillow for Christmas just to give the gel/grid feel a trial.
The GelFlex Grid immediately flexes to support your position and springs back into place as you readjust and move overnight. The Purple Plus Mattress offers a comfort upgrade to the original Purple Mattress, thanks to an extra layer of premium foam that provides better cushioning, responsiveness, and breathability. But the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 version offers the most air circulation but the price tag increases dramatically as well.
I did not choose the Purple for two reasons: the price of the best cooling version and after testing their pillow, the kids decided that maybe they wouldn’t like the feel of the GelFlex grid.

Cocoon by Sealy Chill Hybrid Mattress
The Cocoon by Sealy Chill Hybrid seems to be the perfect combination of their cool-to-the-touch cover, conforming memory foam & premium coils with Active Support Technology. For an extra $200 I added the “extra chill,” which is their enhanced cooling foam & cover work together to eliminate waking up overheated. We shall see! I will create a detailed review once we have experienced the mattress for a few months.

But ultimately the other options won out because it seemed like the major appeal to a Puffy Mattress is the enhanced spinal support it provides which is not a major need I was needing for my young children. So I will reconsider it when I am shopping for myself a new mattress in a couple of years!

Nectar Premium Mattress
Nectar Sleep is a U.S. mattress and bedding company headquartered in Palo Alto, CA. The Nectar is a bed-in-a-box mattress, which means it comes compressed in a box and will take some time to decompress. It sells at a really affordable price compared to its competition, making it a great choice for budget-savvy shoppers like this momma! Here is what stood out to me, making it in my top 5 cooling mattress list. And ultimately it is the cooling mattress I chose for my growing daughter (she’s 8 at this time, so I wanted it to last throughout her school years).
The Nectar Premium mattress is an upgrade from the original Nectar. The Nectar Premium is a 5-layer memory foam mattress. The main difference is a denser comfort layer that creates a softer feel and provides the cooling benefits I was seeking with a PCM-infused gel memory foam.
How firm is the Nectar Premium? Remember, the feel of a mattress is subjective and depends on your body weight and preferred sleeping position. For reference, this was for my daughter who is under 100 pounds but I anticipate her to use it well into high school where she will most likely be my size. I’m a side sleeper who weighs about 125 lbs. If you’re heavier than me you may find this mattress softer than I did, but I agree with their firmness statement and other reviews that claim is a middle-range softness. My daughter is lighter than I, of course, and she thinks it’s firmer but as she grows I am confident that it will feel softer to her, making it more perfect for her in a couple of years!
And though I am not a stickler to always buy eco/planet-friendly products, but I definitely understand the importance and try when I can. And as of January 2022, all Nectar mattresses are 100% Carbon Neutral – so that was a plus!
