As Summer approaches, many families are starting to plan their vacations. I love roadtrips! So, I highly suggest jumping in your car and driving to your destination with your kids, beach toys, bikes, paddleboards, etc…in tow. If you are thinking about taking a road trip this year for Summer vacation, I say go for it, but I have some key tips for ensuring you have a safe and fun trip.
The number one piece of advice I can give for having a successful road trip it to make sure you preparing your vehicle for the long drive!
Look over the tires.
Make sure that your tires have been rotated, are filled with appropriate amount of air and make sure the tread is not too worn or uneven. Low tire pressures waste fuel and, more importantly, cause the tire to run hotter from the extra friction which when combined with speed can cause a blowout.
Change the oil.
Hopefully you keep track of your oil changes. Before a road trip you need to make sure that you are no overdue or coming close to your needed change. If so, it is best to take care of it in preparation for your trip. Mobil 1™ synthetic oil protects more than just your engine.

Check the battery.
Depending on the age of your car battery, there are a number of things to check like the terminals to make sure they are corrosion-free and that the positive and negative leads are tight. Pay attention to your starter sound- if it is sluggish, it either has corrosion or is a dying battery. Don’t wait to be stranded with a dead battery. If it’s not a sealed, maintenance-free battery, have a gas station test its electrolytes. If it is a sealed battery, they can check the output voltage. If there is white chalky stuff (corrosion) on the terminals, be sure to clean it off with a wire -brush that you can easily buy at your local parts store or Walmart.
Checking off car maintenance items before you leave is an important part of preparing for your road trip. Take the time before your trip to ensure you don’t lose time during your trip with car trouble. But most importantly preparing your vehicle for a road trip will help ensure you make it safely back home!
