Now that both kids are older and don’t mind long car rides, we take a lot of road trips around Florida. The worst part about traveling is the lack of health food and how easily it is to forget to drink water. Road trips are often full of tempting pit stops for icees, candy, and coffees.

Staying hydrated with water and free of junk food is important for so many reasons while traveling.

How To Pack for a Healthy Road Trip

Pack serving size bags of healthy snacks

Fill small zip-top bags with the proper serving size of healthy snacks like nuts, trail mix, fresh veggies, and fruit. Granola bars, protein bars, cheeseticks, and applesauce pouches are our favorite prepackaged items.  Taking enough healthy foods will keep you from grabbing those candy bars and chips at the gas station.

Find the perfect water bottle for travel and everyday use

Since staying hydrated is very important when traveling, you need to make sure you have a quality water bottle that keeps water cold, is easy to carry and will not leak. In my search for the perfect water bottle for all our road trips this year, I found the Contigo AUTOSEAL® Chill Spill-Proof water bottle on the housewares aisle at Target. What is great about the AUTOSEAL® technology is that once you make sure the lid is screwed on completely, the bottle is leak and spill proof!

I am a bit picky when it comes to water bottles. I need a water bottle that keeps the water cold for a long period of time in hot weather, like theme parks. I also need it to be easy for my kids to also hold but not spill. This Contigo water bottle keeps water cold for 28 hours and has auto seal technology. As a spill-proof water bottle, the Contigo has become not only a favorite travel water bottle it is perfect for everyday mom life. We take our Contigo bottles on all our family adventures; we took it to LEGOLAND just last weekend. I love that I do not have to worry about the kids closing the lid because with the push of a button they can sip then release and I know it is sealed again.

Target has three exclusive colors, I love my Matte Black with Iced Aqua rim. And right now Target has a limited time offer of $19.99 for these auto seal chill 24oz Contigo bottles.

Make Drinking Water Fun

I prefer water as my go to thirst quencher, but my husband and kids do not share that love. So on long trips, I add citrus and berries to the cooler so that we can have some healthy flavored water while on the go. It is easy to toss some fruit into the water but important to rinse our Contigo after each use with warm water. I love that the lid is top-rack dishwasher safe even though the stainless steel body needs to be hand-washed.

Track Your Water Intake

There are tons of smartphone apps that you can download to track your water intake. With kids, I prefer the old school way of using paper. I created this chart for my family so that we could have a friendly competition while on the road. Since staying hydrated is important, I needed a fun way to monitor everyone’s water intake.  You can download it by simply clicking the link below, no e-mail necessary,  and get your family involved in tracking their water intake.
