Journey to Become a Zero Waste Family- Tips to get started!

March 29, 2022

I started my zero waste journey just recently as an extension of my switch to using toxin-free products and building a home in an eco-friendly community.

Since the start of my new mind-blown perspective about the hazards and wastes thrown at us daily, I’ve built some life-changing momentum, created motivation for my kids, and learned a ton! I’ve uncovered everything from zero waste beauty brands, zero waste cleaning tips, and even zero waste activities that create little to no harm to our planet!

So now I am ready to take the time to write down my learning and hopefully inspire other families to start a journey toward toxin-free and zero waste lifestyle. It’s not something that can happen overnight, just small switches that start creating a snowball of change effect on the way you see and do everything!

First, keep in mind, zero waste is a lifestyle that seeks to use products that can be recycled, reused or composted instead of just thrown away.

It can sound intimidating- I was overwhelmed with the information I consumed at first and felt embarrassed at all I wasted. But I realized it is important to remember that the phrase “zero waste” is best not taken completely literally. Being “zero waste” doesn’t necessarily mean you will generate literally no waste at all. Our environmental footprint is a lot more complex than that.

Basically look at it as zero waste being nothing more magical than simply trying to live less wastefully, one small step at a time. When you take that approach, anyone can start a journey of living to become zero waste.

Four swaps to get started on your Zero Waste Journey

These four swaps are easy ways to get started on your Zero Waste journey for your family.

1. Sip Sustainabily! Use metal straws instead of disposable plastic straws
I have a huge collection of metal (and some bamboo) straws. You can find metal straws everywhere now, from a grocery store aisle to home stores. My favorite ones are these from Pampered Chef because they do not discolor, are a great size and are quality stainless steel. These come in a pair along with a cleaning brush!

2.Pack a lunch, save the planet by using Reusable sandwich/snack bags instead of those small disposable plastic bags.

I have seen alot of reusable snack and lunch bags everywhere now but the only two sets I have invested in so far is the Pampered Chef reusable sandwich bags  and this Stasher Platinum Clear set. Not only are reusable snack bags an easy zero waste swap but they are also handy and cute to take on the go!

3. Bring your own reusable grocery and produce bags. This is an oldie but a goodie. An easy task to swap out that saves the planet so much by eliminating this deadly waste. Did you know that It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately, the bags don’t break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment. *source

4. Choose a Biodegradeable Dental Floss. So many miles of waste are contributed to landfills because of dental floss. Switching to a zero-waste floss is a simple swap. WooBamboo Silk Floss is the perfect solution
